The Terranian Legions

The Terranian Legions are a vast and sprawling force, employing almost four-and-a-half-million individuals; the largest military on Langara.

On placement with one of the legions, a citizen is assigned either to the officer corps or to the ordinary ranks, dependent on their qualifications. In general, those who have gone through vocational courses will be placed as an ordinary man-at-arms, while those with degrees are commissioned to the corps. The corps forms some twenty-percent of the entire force, although twenty percent of those are members of the military élite.

The Military Command is responsible for the entire military; there are no major subdivisions such as army and air force. The authority of the Military Command is devolved through the fifty-six legions, each under the control of a General or Subgeneral. A legion coordinates the activities of troops within a certain field of activity and so all members of any given legion will be trained in the same doctrines of war. Transfer between legions is unusual and transfer to a legion within a different sphere of operations almost unheard of.

I-VII: Air Legions

The Air Legions coordinate the aerial might of the Military, which is second to none on Langara. The first six legions control, respectively: territorial interceptors; fixed-wing fighters; gyrolift gunships; fixed-wing bombers; coastguard aircraft; and transport aircraft.

Legio VII is responsible for rocketry and space exploration, working with members of the Academy and the Scientific Elite on the fledgling Terranian space programme. Since the arrival of the Goa'uld, the programme has enjoyed a massive upsurge in funding and prestige and its mandate has been altered to include the reverse engineering of Goa'uld technology captured from downed gliders and abandoned transporters.

VIII-XX: Naval Legions

The Naval Legions are responsible for maritime military action, controlling a mixture of surface vessels, submarines and torpedo lifts (gyrolifts armed with torpedoes, which operate in concert with sonar stations or airborne sonar against submerged craft). Each of the thirteen legions controls a different area of the ocean. There are eight coastal territories, two territories in the Central Sea and three in the Outer Ocean. Like the Kelownans, the Terranian Navy is currently attempting to close the technological and doctrinal gap created by the launch of the carrier AWS Alamut.

XXI-XXX: Infantry Legions

The Infantry Legions are the common soldiery of Terrania and include regular, mobile and mechanized infantry. As with the navy, each of the infantry legions notionally controls a territory and is responsible for military actions within that area. Legiones XXI-XXIII control operations in or around Kelowna; XXIV are responsible for the border state of Atharis and the independent Southern Provinces, while XXV-XXVII would be responsible for invading past the borders to the Andari Federation; XXVIII and XXIX protect Terranian territory; and Legio XXX is the primary logistical body for the Military Command.

XXXI-XXXIV: Marines Legions

The Marine Legions are responsible for amphibious warfare. They work closely with the navy and provide specialised combat personnel for all large vessels as well as landing forces, specialising in beachhead operations. The majority of Terranian combat personnel supplied to the SEG are drawn from Marine Legio XXXII and trained in the rapid strike and hold methodologies necessary for any force assault through a Stargate.

XXXV-XXXVIII: Armoured Legions

Legiones XXXV-XXXVIII are the Terranian tank corps. Each of the legions deploys a wide range of armoured vehicles, ranging from light attack vehicles to the mighty land trains; massive mobile fortresses which carry platoons of mechanized infantry and support personnel and act as field headquarters for large troop movements.

XXXIX-XLI: Airborne Legions

The Terranian Airborne are the only troops of their type on Langara; no other armed force on the planet has yet developed the paratroop doctrine. With their command of the skies, the Terranians added infantry deployment by air to their military resources about a decade ago.

XLII-XLIX: Artillery Legions

Legions numbered above 41 are designated Auxiliary Legions and their members are only deployed alongside those of other commands. Artillerists are attached in platoons to larger commands to provide supporting fire.

L-LIV: Engineering Legions

The Engineering Legions provide technical expertise in the fields of military engineering, including mines and mine clearance, trench building and siege warfare.

LV: Commando Legion

The Commandos of Legio LV are highly-trained in various military, including clandestine, doctrines. They are deployed in small units for special operations or in platoons for shock attacks.

LVI: Medical Legion

Legio LVI provides training and administration for Terranian military doctors. Members of the command are assigned to military hospitals, attached to military units as medics or deployed in field surgeries.
